The NGO Regulatory Authority (NGORA), is a statutory corporation mandated to register and regulate operations of NGOs in Malawi.
Section 22 of the NGO Act states that, every registered NGO shall file with the Registrar’s office annually documents consisting of audited financial statements; annual reports outlining activities undertaken in that year; annual returns reflecting the NGOs administrative information; and source of funding. The deadline for submission of 2021 reports was 30th September, 2022. All NGOs that did not submit reports by the deadline have been issued with warning letters.
NGORAs database has 880 registered NGOs. Information regarding compliance status and registered NGOs is available at https://www.ngora.mw/2021-2 and www.myngo.mw.
NGORA further wishes to inform non-compliant NGOs that it will conduct orientation meetings for all NGO Trustees and members of the boards that did not comply. The orientation provides an opportunity to the Trustees to acquire a full knowledge of their fiduciary duty of public accountability under the NGO Law. The meeting times will be from 8am-11am, and NGORA will only be responsible for the conference package. Any other logistical arrangements should be met by the individual organisation. NGO board members are encouraged to attend a meeting near to them. The meetings have been scheduled as follows:
- Lilongwe – BICC 9th January, 2023
- Blantyre – Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel 11th January, 2023
- Machinga – Venue TBA 13th January, 2023
- Mzuzu – Sunbird Hotel 16th January, 2023
Please confirm your attendance to these orientation meetings with Pilirani Munkha on email: pmunkha@ngora.mw.
